PILOT Issue #6 / Preview 02: Space Is The Place
Our new issue includes 3 features loosely related to the topic of space. Firstly a typographical tour of the Solar System, then the iconography of Star Wars is juxtaposed with the contemporary architectural setting, and finally, we have an extended interview with Seth Shostak, the senior scientist at the SETI Institute. Seth maintains that we will find ET by the year 2025. He’s a fascinating guy, and the interview is great reading. Check out our new issue to explore the above features in full.
PILOT Issue #6 / Preview 01: Architecture
The new issue of PILOT contains 3 striking architecture features. The intro spread to each feature is included above, with a shot from each story. Each feature has much more inside the actual magazine. Each feature is based on a stunning architecture, very strong photography, and we’ve tried to present them to best effect, through the use of strong typography and the magic of graphic design.
PILOT issue #6 / The Cover
Here is the cover of PILOT issue #6. It is available from Auckland Mag Nation stores NOW. And from wherever good magazines are sold, nationwide from Monday December 19.
Yes, that’s David Dallas on the cover. Doing a pretty fine Don Draper impression in a Crane Brothers suit & Karen Walker ring. Photography by Guy Coombes, Fashion styling by Emma Gleason. Lots more shots of Dave, and a big interview inside the issue. Will post a few more highlights from the issue soon.
A quick update…
Here at PILOT we’re in deadline mode. Look for issue #6 to hit stores in December. We think it is shaping up to be a strong issue.
Early in 2012 we will relaunch the PILOT website with a new website that showcases the actual magazine. At the same time the blog will relaunch as a proper blog with regularly updated words and pictures. A website that reflects the quality and elegance of PILOT the magazine is something we’ve wanted to do for a while now. It’s long overdue. We’re excited. More soon.

Best Design Awards 2011
PILOT Magazine and our friends at InHouse Design are pleased indeed that PILOT is a finalist at this year’s Best Design Awards. We won the Gold Award for Editorial Design in 2009 and 2010, and we’re a finalist again this year. Nice.

PILOT Shortlisted at the London D&AD Awards
For those who don’t know, London based D&AD is one of the most selective and prestigious award shows in the world. Every year the best agencies, designers and publications from all over the world enter their very best creative work to see how it matches up against their peers. Given the sheer volume of entrants and the high standard of the work entered, to win a coveted pencil, or to make the shortlist, is a notoriously difficult challenge. Many will try. Few will succeed. For these reasons, PILOT & Inhouse are chuffed to announce that PILOT Magazine issue #4 was shortlisted in the Magazine and Newspaper Design section for the D&AD Professional Awards 2011. We’re in pretty good company alongside other titles such as Wallpaper*, Monocle and Wired.
