Pilot Issue #2…

So we’re working hard on Pilot issue #2. The issue is just starting to take shape and so far, so good. We hope to present some very strong content, some killer interviews and one or two extra-drop-dead-knock-out-good fashion stories. As far as meaningless statements go, that was a good one right? Of course you want details, details… And as much as we’d love to spill some of those details, we can’t. Not yet anyway. The pleasure in publishing comes from holding the physical magazine and not knowing what surprises lie within… well, that’s what we reckon anyway.

Issue #2 will hit stores very early in May. We are doing our very best to ensure it is worth the wait.

So that said, welcome to the Pilot blog. Please bear with us as we get up to full speed. What you see now is version 1.0 the bare basic essentials edition. We’ll be working on the blog over the coming months and will soon add a proper Pilot website showcasing the actual magazine.

In other news French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld tells CNN the current economic climate is affecting premium fashion magazines. “I think we need to become more frugal,” said Carine Roitfeld. “Not on quality,” she hastened to add, “just on organization.” She went on to say, “It’s become ridiculous. Where once eight people may have gathered around a table to discuss a photo shoot, now there are 25. Some things went too far. There were people flying private jets – we need to go back to reality. I don’t want to take the money out of the beauty of the picture, I don’t want to change the paper of the magazine, but we can do it another way. When it’s more difficult you have to be more creative.”

Roitfeld is a fascinating fashion creature. She has been editor-in-chief at French Vogue since 2001, where every month, Roitfeld and her small team create what is generally considered to be the world’s most fashion-forward magazine. The fashion industry loves to gossip, and there is growing speculation that Anna Wintour, editor of American Vogue, who is 60 this year, may be approaching retirement. Many see Roitfeld as Wintour’s natural replacement but Roitfeld herself describes the speculation as “frustrating.” She told CNN she hadn’t been offered the job and probably wouldn’t take it anyway.

For an overview of Roitfeld’s career and her highly regarded standing in the world of fashion, CNN’s Revealed profile on the French Vogue editor is worth your time. Revealed screened here in NZ on CNN yesterday and can still be watched from the CNN website.
