Trelise Cooper’s Air New Zealand Uniforms UPDATED

nz3

Air New Zealand has revealed its new “concept” uniform designs by Trelise Cooper.  Stuff reports, “The uniform will be introduced in 2011. Trelise Cooper was chosen over 25 other New Zealand designers to come up with the new designs.  Airline spokesman Ed Sims said the uniform was “contemporary”, based on New Zealand themes that still allowed individual choice by addressing body type and personality preference.  A flight attendant who spoke to The Dominion Post said the uniform resembled the look sported on the airline’s annual themed flight to Sydney’s Mardi Gras festival. “The attendants look like drag queens off the Air New Zealand ‘pink’ flight.”

Air NZ say they are working with Trelise to ensure the colour palette works in harmony with soon to be unveiled new aircraft interiors. Does this mean the new aircraft interiors will be candyfloss pink?! Or perhaps they’ll feature Florence Broadhurst Wallpaper? Actually, that would be kinda nice… To see the full collection of looks released so far and reaction to the designs, head to Isaaclikes

Oh dear. The Trelise bashing has gone global with the Sydney Morning Herald picking up on the drag queen comments, the UK’s Daily Mail asking the question – Is Air New Zealand’s ‘drag queen’ cabin crew outfit the world’s worst flight uniform?  And finally, Stylelist, picking up on the same drag queen references ends its piece by hilariously suggesting that, Surely there’s a “Flight of the Conchords” song in all this?

And finally Trelise herself speaks about the uniform and more…

Well I didn’t think they could get much worse than the zambesi disaster but I have been proved wrong. The poor staff. The blue tie and braces looks like a clown and the dress looks like a bad wallpaper design. It is not a uniform as none of the pieces match or go together.

This is what happens when your CEO wears pink. And promotes pink flights.. Come on Air NZ, time to be taken seriously, especially after the recent no.1 vote. It’s ok to be cutting edge when it comes to service and marketing, but don’t push the envelope too far. Especially when your staff will be the ones who suffer – in this case looking freakish!

The new uniforms are truely AWFUL. They do not even follow the AirNZ colour scheme. Their design also would not look good on a bigger woman – sure, they look fine on the slim models showing them off. There are also too many choices of designs staff can choose from. I can not understand why it is so difficult to get this right? Even I could do a better job of picking a sophisticated, practical set of ideas with a ‘kiwi flair’ to it. Who on earth thought that Trelise Cooper – who specialises in florally, lacey, frilly womans clothing, would be a practical choice for designing AirNZ staff uniforms???? it’s ridiculous. And i don’t want to even imagine how much she was paid to come up with these god awful designs and fabrics. Purple smocks and over the top koru patterns? How did a board of people all agree to this and say ‘yes, it looks nice lets go ahead with it’??
